Our Vision for Local Democracy
Welsh Liberal Democrats are campaigning to strengthen local democracy right across the Country. As part of this, Carmarthenshire Liberal Democrats want to:
- Review and change the democratic structure of Carmarthenshire County Council - it needs to reflect the different political voices that exist in every community across the County.
- Establish a Citizens' Assembly for the County using the models established in Canada for such Assemblies.
- Make sure that local people know much more about what is going in the Council - accountable local democracy has been lacking in recent years and must be restored.
- Change the decision making structures of the Council so that all the political groups are represented - we should make use of the full range of skills and experience in the Council Chamber.
- Ensure the Council works in an inclusive way, especially in the period ahead when it will be facing major financial challenges.
- Ensure that the Council is operating open and transparent practices in the way it works.
- Implement a policy of webcasting and recording of all Council meetings (except those subject to legitimate legal confidentiality).
- Ensure the Council operates comprehensive and effective equal opportunity and diversity policies.
- Ensure that the Welsh Language is fostered and promoted by the Council and that the Language is integral to service delivery policies.
