Commenting on Bethan Jenkins' claim that she is going to start a cross-party 'Yes Campaign', Mike German, leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats has said that she needs to get the leadership of her own party on board first before sending out invites to other parties.
Mike German has been calling for all parties to work together on a 'Yes Campaign' since the start of the year.
Mike German said:
"I applaud Bethan Jenkins' comments; in fact, I said most of what she is saying earlier on in the year. But until the Plaid Cymru leadership are serious about primary law-making powers for Wales, Bethan Jenkins' hopes for a successful 'Yes campaign' will remain a distant dream.
"Where Bethan and I differ on this matter is that she thinks we should wait until after the All Wales convention has report back its findings, I strongly believe that this 'Yes Campaign' needs to start now. We have already lost valuable campaigning time and waiting for this Convention to report will set us back even further.
"We cannot jeopardise Wales' opportunity of getting better and more effective powers for Wales.
"I have asked Rhodri and Ieuan to join me in firing the staring gun for the 'Yes campaign' many times but they seem to be delaying and delaying. We need to start the strategic planning for a 'Yes' campaign.
"For a Yes Campaign to be successful it will require a coming together of all the pro-devolution parties - the Welsh Lib Dems and the leader of the Welsh Conservatives has already given support - and other people passionate about Wales' future from outside party politics.
"The Welsh Liberal Democrats are utterly committed to delivering a Yes campaign for Wales however, until Bethan Jenkins can sort out her own party's attitude to the campaign, it will be impossible to get that cross-party consensus we both want.
"The sooner we have a referendum on more powers, the better for Wales."
